High School and GCSE Tutoring

We teach English at Key Stage 3 (years 7-9) and Key Stage 4 (years 10 & 11 -GCSE).  We are passionate about our subject and our aim is to raise the children's aspirations, pass on our love of literature and reading and ensure they are able to progress and do their best in school. 

In Key Stage 3, we focus on laying the important foundations for Key Stage 4; helping your children to gain a strong understanding of different literary genres, language and structural features. We encourage our students to experiment with these in their own writing and also to read books that challenge their imagination.

We put great literature at the heart of every session, helping the children to improve their analytical paragraphs and rhetorical writing and building the stamina they will need to craft extended pieces of writing in Key Stage 4.

In Years 10 and 11, we prepare the students for their English Language and English Literature GCSEs by focussing on their reading and writing skills. 

For reading, this will involve:

·  understanding and critically evaluating a variety of texts

·  reading in different ways for different purposes, summarising and synthesising ideas and information, and evaluating their usefulness for particular purposes

·  drawing on knowledge of the purpose, audience for and context of the writing

·  identifying and interpreting themes, ideas and information

·  exploring aspects of plot, characterisation, events and settings, the relationships between them and their effects

·  seeking evidence in the text to support a point of view 

·  analysing a writer’s choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features, and evaluating their effectiveness and impact

·  making critical comparisons, referring to the contexts, themes, characterisation, style and literary quality of texts

For writing our students will be tutored to:

·  write accurately, fluently, effectively and at length for pleasure and information

·  adapt their writing for a wide range of purposes and audiences: to describe, narrate, explain, instruct, give and respond to information, and argue

·  select and organise ideas, facts and key points, citing evidence, details and quotations effectively for support and emphasis

·  select, and use the appropriate vocabulary, grammar, form, and structural and organisational features, including rhetorical devices, to reflect audience, purpose and context, and use Standard English

·  revise, edit and proof-read through, paying attention to the accuracy and effectiveness of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary

The maths department at Progress Tutoring is dedicated to helping students improve their mathematical skills and achieve academic success.
